Children and the Joy of Giving

When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed

Maya Angelou, poet and activist

The holidays are upon us! For most of us, ’tis the season for family traditions and celebrations: decorating our homes, planning and cooking meals, attending gatherings with friends and family.

‘Tis also the season of “Giving.” This season is a wonderful opportunity to teach children about the joy of sharing, not just receiving. Emphasizing the act of giving helps foster generosity and empathy while inspiring gratitude-gratitude for what they have and a deeper appreciation for their own lives.

We, as adults, can demonstrate that giving takes many forms. We can give tangible presents, like toys and books. We can give the gift of our time, like including an elderly relative with our plans or volunteering at a charitable event.

Although young children are still generally self-involved, studies have shown that they have a deeply-rooted motivation to share and help others, and to be kind and generous. Let’s encourage and nurture this natural ability.

Consistently encourage children early on about thinking of other people’s feelings. Praise them for spontaneously helping others, and for showing appreciation for others. Giving is not only for the holidays, it can be a daily occurrence.

Children can come to understand that giving is not only an act of kindness but also a profoundly rewarding experience.
